Valentines Day Activities, Games, and More in the Intermediate Classroom

Valentines Day Activities, Games, and More in the Intermediate Classroom

Valentine's Day is fast approaching! That means another class party that needs to be organized. We do something creative at the 5th grade level. Instead of students making simple bags for Valentine's holders, we have a fun contest. Students are to design their own Valentine's holders. In past years we have had: football fields, basketball courts, ladybugs, gumball machines, robots, and gigantic monsters.  The below link includes the letter sent home to parents and the "award" ribbons that we give out for creativity and participation.
Getting the party ready is also fun! My students love planning the parties so I pick a recess for the appointed committee (everyone gets a turn on one of our holiday parties) to come in and start planning. We start off by discussing what treats to bring in for the party. I have the students write what they want to bring in their assignment notebooks. I make sure to have a good balance of treats, drinks, and the all important utensils, plates, and napkins. You can't forget those.

Next, we plan what activities we want to do. I give them a list of fun activities and games that I have done in the past. Below will be a listing of the activities and a brief description of each.

This is a three-page packet for a bingo activity for Valentine's Day. Included is: the bingo game board, the words to pick for the game board, and the word cards to call off during the game. Guaranteed to be fun for students!

Valentine's Day Stations
There are 11 activity cards that can be printed off and set up around the classroom and used as Valentine's Day stations or centers. Some of the activities include squiggle stories, word find puzzles, math, and many more.

This is a fun activity that I do with my students for a Valentine's Day station. This document is 2-pages in length. The document includes a full page game board and a page of game cards.

The kids have a lot of fun choosing between those fun activities, and it makes it easier as a teacher to be in some control during the party. I used to let my students create the games and they sometimes would get out of hand.

Finally, I allow the students on the committee to decorate the room during recesses.  I usually get construction paper colors such as: red, white, pink and purple. A favorite of the students is making chains to hang from the ceiling. Cut-out hearts are always popular too.

No matter what you do this Valentine's Day in your classroom, make sure that the students have fun and are kind to each other. That's what the day is all about!
